After four years studying at university, Rui Pascoal struggled to find a job related to his degree. It is a story many young people will recognize.
However, having a father working as a foreman at a construction company and with some jobsite experience under his belt, Rui quickly made up his mind to qualify as an Operating Engineer.
He said, “I realized that I wanted to pursue a career as an operator and then learned about OETIO through my father. My experience here has been very positive – informative, engaging and valuable for my career development.”
The Heavy Equipment apprentice also learned some valuable lessons while at OETIO’s Morrisburg training facility.
“One of the most important lessons I’ve received is not to rely solely on GPS or similar technologies. It’s essential to master the basics without them, because technology can fail and having strong foundational skills ensures you can keep working and earning.”
He also believes more people should consider the trades as a career.
“I would strongly encourage anyone to consider OETIO. The apprenticeship provides hands-on experience, excellent training and the opportunity to earn a Red Seal certification, which allows you to work across Canada.”
