Local 793 purchases property in Hamilton to provide better service to members

The Executive Board of Local 793 has approved the purchase of a 2.15-acre property in Hamilton. The Board voted unanimously to approve the purchase for $2.76 million (plus HST). The deal officially closes March 18, 2022. The property is located at 1199 Barton Street and best suits the needs of the Local and members. The Executive Board of Local 793 has approved the purchase of a 2.15-acre property in Hamilton.

The Board voted unanimously to approve the purchase for $2.76 million (plus HST). The deal officially closes March 18, 2022.

The property is located at 1199 Barton Street and best suits the needs of the Local and members. Once constructed, the building will serve as a hub office that will service members’ day-to-day requirements in South Central Ontario.

Business Manager Mike Gallagher and the Executive Board continue to search for appropriate properties to build hub offices in three other targeted regions of the province: Barrie, Sarnia, and Thunder Bay.

Sky is the limit for Local 793 members

Local 793 members are helping build a 46-story structural steel-framed commercial office tower in Toronto’s Financial District. General contractor is PCL Construction. Located at 160 Front Street West, the complex will rise 240 metres into the downtown skyline and is set to house new office and retail space. Banking giant TD will occupy 33 floors of the tower. Government of Canada promotes in-demand skilled trades as a first-choice career path

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, skilled tradespeople have been critical to essential sectors, and the demand for skilled tradespeople is expected to remain high over the next 10 years as Canada’s economy recovers. The most recent projections estimate about 700,000 skilled trades workers are expected to retire between 2019 and 2028, creating an ever-growing need to recruit and train thousands more. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, skilled tradespeople have been critical to essential sectors, and the demand for skilled tradespeople is expected to remain high over the next 10 years as Canada’s economy recovers. The most recent projections estimate about 700,000 skilled trades workers are expected to retire between 2019 and 2028, creating an ever-growing need to recruit and train thousands more.

The campaign will reach youth and young adults through popular social media platforms, websites, campus billboards, public transit and national broadcast media.

Also launched as part of this campaign is Canada.ca/skilled-trades, a comprehensive website that offers a one-stop national source for information about the skilled trades. The site will help young Canadians learn about the more than 300 skilled trades in Canada, including the construction sector and the Red Seal trade designation.

“Canada’s workforce needs more skilled trade workers. They have expertise and skills that are essential to our economy and our way of life,” said Carla Qualtrough, Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Disability Inclusion. “When Canadians are contemplating a new career, we want them to consider entering the skilled trades and to understand the exciting, well-paying opportunities that they present.”

Engage with the Government of Canada to follow through on their 2022 Federal Budget campaign commitment and implement a skilled trades workforce mobility tax deduction for out-of-pocket expenses when travelling for work. The cost to travel for work (mileage, accommodations, food, etc.) are not tax deductible and isn’t always covered by your employer. When costs aren’t covered by your employer, skilled trades workers, like Local 793 members, should receive equal treatment under the Income Tax Act. A new report by the Ontario Construction Secretariat (OCS) highlights the growing role of Unions and their contractor partners in delivering skills upgrade, apprenticeship and health and safety training.
