Local 793 members are working for HK United Construction on the Highway 89 overpass bridge project in Innisfil, ON. The wider overpass will replace the existing 70-year-old bridge while improving traffic flow and reducing the commute times for travellers. Due to the proximity to the Christmas holiday season and increased public health advisories, Local 793 members are advised that all remaining district meetings in December are cancelled. Below is a list of the cancelled district meetings: • December 14 – Windsor and St. Catharines • December 15 – Toronto • December 21 – Sudbury • December 22 – Ottawa, Hamilton and North Bay • December 23 – Sarnia and Barrie • December 28 – Belleville and London Please contact a local area office HERE if you have any questions.

The government is dropping its tentative plan to end the provincial vaccine-passport program in mid-January and will require all proof-of-vaccination certificates to include QR codes as of Jan. 4, 2022. Members working for Coco Paving are busy on a paving job for Beech Infrastructure on Wilmot Street in New Hamburg, Ontario. Beech Infrastructure is replacing the existing watermain and sanitary lines. The MCR project is part of Bruce Power’s life extension program that began in January 2020 and focuses on the replacement of key reactor components in Units 3-8. Earlier this week, an Ontario arbitrator dismissed a union grievance challenging a mandatory COVID-19 vaccination policy. The employer, a security guard company, had required all its employees to be fully vaccinated or face potential disciplinary measures. Local 333 of the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) union filed the grievance. The arbitrator found that the employer’s vaccination policy was reasonable, enforceable and compliant with the Ontario Human Rights Code and the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA). Earlier this week, an Ontario arbitrator dismissed a union grievance challenging a mandatory COVID-19 vaccination policy. The employer, a security guard company, had required all its employees to be fully vaccinated or face potential disciplinary measures.

Local 333 of the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) union filed the grievance.

The arbitrator found that the employer’s vaccination policy was reasonable, enforceable and compliant with the Ontario Human Rights Code and the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA).

The arbitrator held that by introducing the policy, the employer was fulfilling its obligations and responsibilities pursuant to s. 25(2)(h) of the OHSA to take “every precaution reasonable in the circumstances for the protection of a worker.”

The arbitrator also stated in the decision that an employee’s subjective perceptions of the COVID-19 vaccine were insufficient grounds for a statutory exemption.
