The award is sponsored by the Crane Rental Association of Ontario and International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 793.

The award is named after the late Ray Goodfellow, who owned Whiskey Jack Cranes Inc. Ray was president of the Crane Rental Association of Ontario, a 24-year member of Local 793, and a management trustee on the union’s training and life and health benefits trust funds.

To be eligible for this scholarship, the applicant must be the son, daughter or grandchild of one of the following:

  • A Crane Rental Association of Ontario (CRAO) company owner; or
  • An Employee of a CRAO company; or
  • An IUOE Local 793 member in good standing who is employed by a company that is an active member of the CRAO that works in the crane rental or concrete pump sectors.

Each year, a committee appointed by the Crane Rental Association of Ontario board of directors determines the amount and number of scholarships to be awarded. In 2018, two awards of $4,000 each will be awarded.

The scholarship recipient must be entering the first or subsequent year of a full-time course of study (at least two years in length) leading to a diploma, certificate or degree from any recognized public Canadian college or university

Eligible persons are able to apply more than once. However, once they have received a bursary they are no longer eligible to receive another award.

Applications must be supported by:

  • Transcripts of high school/ post-secondary achievement, and
  • Accompanied by a detailed letter of recommendation from an individual with personal academic knowledge of the candidate, outlining reasons why the bursary should be awarded.

Applicants must also submit a one thousand (1,000) word essay on the subject of either A or B:

A: The reason(s) why the scholarship will be of assistance.

B: The impact of being a son, daughter or grandchild of one of the following:

  • A Crane Rental Association of Ontario (CRAO) company owner; or
  • An Employee of a CRAO company; or
  • An IUOE Local 793 member in good standing who is employed by a company that is an active member of the CRAO that works in the crane rental or concrete pump sectors.

Please be advised that district meetings in the Toronto area will be temporarily changing locations. Members can either update their address online or can contact their nearest union office or 793 head office to update their address. Please Note: Due to privacy, we can only accept address changes from members. Although members will be able to download their 2018 tax receipts online, they are automatically sent out to members’ home addresses as well.

New start time for Thunder Bay monthly meetings

Beginning in April, the start time for the Thunder Bay district monthly meetings will been changed to 7 p.m. from 8 p.m. February and March’s monthly meetings remain an 8 p.m. start. The union’s executive board approved the changes. Thunder Bay’s meetings are held on the 1st Thursday of every month.

  • Psychologist: Services of a psychologist, psychotherapist and social worker subject to a combined maximum of $1,000 per calendar year. Note that psychotherapist and social worker were added to the existing psychologist benefit under the Plan.
  • Health Care Spending Account:  The maximum benefit increased from $400 per family per calendar year to $500 per family per calendar year.
  • Vision care: Increase from $600 to $800 and reduced from 24 months to every 12 months from the last date of service for vision aids prescribed by a qualified physician or optometrist for members and dependants regardless of age.
  • Increase laser eye coverage from $1,000 to $2,000 per lifetime.
  • Long Term Disability – Monetary Benefit: Increase the flat benefit amount from $1,250 to $1,500 per month for existing and future claimants who remain totally and continuously disabled, until the earliest of your recovery, death, attainment of age 65 or the date you have received 10 years of benefit payments.
  • Long Term Disability – Permanent Waiver of Premium (Benefit Freezing) – Members on existing and future Long Term Disability Benefits (LTD) may be eligible for Permanent Waiver of Premium (WOP) until they attain the age of 65 provided ongoing medical supports their disability.
  • Group Legal Benefits: Members on Long Term Disability can now utilize the Group Legal Benefit Plan.

RETIREE PLAN:

Effective January 1, 2020 you will pay your regular Defence Assessment.

Eligibility

In order to be eligible, members must be in good standing with the union as of December 31, 2018.

They must also have their current defence assessments paid up to date (to the end of 2018) by no later than December 31, 2018.

If a member has already prepaid the $30 defence assessment for 2019, a credit will be applied to their account for a future year.

Any member who joins membership or pays their defence assessment following the deadline will be required to pay the regular defence assessment for 2019.

Local 793’s Defence Assessment

The fund provides money for “pay strike or lockout benefits to the members of Local 793 and its subdivisions, or any other expenses incurred as a result of a strike or lockout,” according to the by-laws.

The fund is administered by a committee comprised of the business manager, president, recording-corresponding secretary and one other officer selected by the business manager. Also, five other members who represent different regions of the province of Ontario as determined by the business manager.

Should the requirement arise, all eligible members who meet the criteria of the contribution holiday will be eligible for strike pay in 2019.
