Local 793 was proud to join our Brothers and Sisters from locals across North America at the 64th IUOE Annual Canadian Conference in Winnipeg.
Local 793’s delegation included the entire slate of elected officials and was led by Business Manager Mike Gallagher, who received congratulations from Canadian Regional Director Patrick Campbell on his team’s recent acclimation. It was noted that Brother Gallagher is the longest-serving IUOE business manager in Canada.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was this year’s headline speaker. Business Manager Gallagher took the opportunity to question Canada’s PM, raising several issues of concern to Local 793’s membership, including the high cost of groceries and housing.
Brother Gallagher told Mr. Trudeau, “We have kids or grandkids who feel there is no hope that they can ever get themselves into a home – we need to build now and put our members to work. But we also need to deal with the grocers who have taken advantage of our people during Covid. I would suggest that if you were to go after that, it might be a very popular thing with Canadians.”
Brother Gallagher closed by urging the prime minister to develop a new deal for the people “that will correct what ails us here in Canada.”
During a wide-ranging response, Mr. Trudeau touted his government’s record on investing in infrastructure and public services. He insisted, “If the next election is actually about who has a plan to meet the changing world, we’re in and solve the challenges we’re facing, then I like our chances.”
Before the three-day event closed, Local 793 President Dave Turple was elected to the Canadian Conference Executive Board.
