Earlier today, Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland confirmed that the Canada Response Benefit (CRB) benefit will expire on October 23. In its place, the federal government says it will launch a “Canada Worker Lockdown Benefit” which will pay $300 per week to eligible workers subject to a provincial lockdown, including those ineligible for EI.

This new program will run from Oct. 24 – May 7 and act as an insurance policy so that provinces do not need to fear about individual economic impacts of a lockdown, should one be necessary. This new program is estimated to cost $7.4 billion.

IUOE Canadian Regional Director, Lionel Railton, issued a letter yesterday stating the importance of getting vaccinated

“COVID-19 is a preventable disease. By getting vaccinated, you can help protect yourself and your coworkers from the likelihood of getting sick, being hospitalized, or dying from COVID-19. Vaccination is a matter of workplace health and safety; it helps protect those who are inoculated and limits the chance the virus can spread to others on the job. It is the most proven method for fighting back against COVID-19. There is no other solution to ending this pandemic.”
