February is Black History Month when together, we celebrate the achievements of Black Canadians who have helped shape our workplaces, our communities, and our union.

The theme this year is: “Ours to tell.” This represents both an opportunity to engage in open dialogue and a commitment to learning more about the stories Black communities in Canada have to tell about their histories, successes, sacrifices and triumphs.

In December 1995, the House of Commons officially recognized February as Black History Month in Canada following a motion introduced by Dr. Jean Augustine, the first African Canadian woman to be elected as an MP. The motion passed unanimously.
Every February since then, people across Canada participate in Black History Month events and festivities that honour the contribution made to the development of this country by members of the Black community. Since so much of their history and experience has been ignored, it is a time to recognize how Black people continue to help shape our communities, industries and nation.

This month and every month, IUOE Local 793 is committed to fighting racism and hatred in all forms. We encourage members not to be neutral when witnessing racism and to stand up in defence of their fellow Brothers and Sisters. We strive for equality, fairness, and positive change on sites and at every level of the industry.

Local 793 is a union of hope, hard work, pride, and perseverance.
