Local 793 wishes all our First Nations, Inuit and Métis members and their families a happy National Indigenous Peoples Day!

As the longest day of the year, the summer solstice has been marked by the people of Turtle Island for generations, providing a chance for them to come together to celebrate their culture, heritage and diversity.

Today also provides non-Indigenous Canadians an opportunity to join in the fun, with dozens of celebrations taking place across Ontario. Whether at traditional sunrise ceremonies, concerts or food tastings, there are lots of events being staged that every member of the family can support.

Jim Jacobs, Local 793 Indigenous Relations Coordinator and a member of the Mohawk/Bear Clan of the Six Nations, spends a lot of his time visiting Indigenous communities and speaking to young people about the benefits of a career in the skilled trades as a Union member.

“I encourage everyone to come out to an Indigenous Peoples Day event near you. It’s a wonderful opportunity to learn about the rich culture and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Metis Indigenous Peoples of Canada,” he said.

Members in Timmins can catch Brother Jacobs this evening as he performs at the Indigenous Peoples Day celebration at Hollinger Park at 5 p.m. You can also read more about his road to country music success in the latest edition of Making Tracks magazine here.
