Local 793 Members Helping Build World-Leading Reactor in Darlington

A large number of Operating Engineers are involved in the Darlington New Nuclear Project, which is leading the advancement of Small Modular Reactor (SMR) technology in Canada. Brothers working for Aecon Foundations on-site are Leo Rasile, Matt Dell, Josh Fera, Justin Howes, Dan Parisien, Eric Roberge, and Chris James. Canada’s first grid-scale SMR in Darlington is part of the Ontario government’s larger plan to meet emerging energy needs and ensure a reliable, affordable, clean electricity supply. This project alone will deliver 300 MW of electricity, enough to power 300,000 homes.

Members Working Hard at a Long-Term Care Facility in Seaton Village

Kevin Rodrigues, a recent OETIO tower crane apprenticeship graduate, is now working for Hardrock at a Buttcon construction site on a 200-bed long-term care facility at Seaton Village in Pickering. Brother Kevin’s foreman is quite impressed with his skills and knowledge as an operator and says he has a promising career as a tower crane operator. The Seaton House Long-Term Care construction is a 3-storey building supporting senior care for 200 residents, including 20 behavioural units for people with complex care needs such as dementia.  The care home expects to welcome its […]

Members Busy Working On $65M Road Reconstruction Projects in Oshawa

Steve Charpentier, employed by Brennan Paving, is a Local 793 heavy equipment operator (HEO) apprentice. He has been running a CAT D6T dozer on the $65 million road reconstruction project in Oshawa since last summer. Steve is filled with pride as he approaches the completion of his apprenticeship. The scope of work includes replacing overpass structures along Simcoe St. S and Albert St. over Highway 401, shoulder widening and rehabilitation of Highway 401 through Oshawa, construction of a cul-de-sac along Lviv Blvd., and reconstruction of the Lviv Blvd. and Albert St. and Bloor St. and Simcoe St. S intersections. New storm sewers and water mains will also be installed, and the Michael Starr Trail multi-use pathway will be re-aligned.

The expected completion date of all construction works is November 2024.

This project continuously supports signatory contractors, including Amherst, BW Haggard, and BAUER Foundations.

Near Decade Integrity Dig Package Project in Morrisburg Area Keeping Local 793 Members Busy

Local 793 members, Foreman Roland Pellerin, Operators Brad Brownell and Patrick O’Grady, Lead Hand Finlay Ross, and Apprentices Curtis Reid and Nicholas James Clark, currently employed by Robert B. Somerville Co. Limited, have been seasonally working on an Integrity Dig package for the Trans-Northern Pipeline for almost a decade. The members are undertaking maintenance digs to conduct inspections and repairs to ensure the public’s and the environment’s safety in the Morrisburg area.

Tomlinson employee and Local 793 member Colin Warwick works at the Sherwood Park Manor expansion project site in Brockville along Highway 2. The modernization of Sherwood Park Manor is expected to deliver 21 new and 75 upgraded long-term care beds, increasing its capacity to a 128-bed home care facility, including new amenities. Upon completion in the fall of 2025, an additional four-storey will be added to the current senior care home.

OETIO Apprentices Awarded for Skills Ontario Competition

Congratulations to our OETIO apprentices for placing in this year’s 2024 Skills Ontario Competition for mobile crane operation! The 1st place medal was awarded to David Mullett, while the 2nd and 3rd place were given to Mark Davidson and James Grieves, respectively. Their outstanding display of skills and knowledge at the competition has put them at the top. The other OETIO mobile crane level 4 apprentices who participated were Dylan Jones, Brian Corkery, John Gawron, Dean Hardiment and Robert Spencer.
