The City of Iqaluit says that investigators have found a historic fuel spill beside the water treatment plant that may be the source of contamination in its water supply.

Testing is being done to confirm the spill is the source of the contamination. There is still no timeline for when the city’s tap water will be safe to drink.

On October 12, the city and the Government of Nunavut Health Department told Iqalummiut not to drink the tap water from the municipal water supply because it was suspected it had been contaminated with fuel.

Study shows vaccinated people are less likely to spread COVID-19

A recent study completed found that fully vaccinated people are 63 per cent less likely to spread the delta variant and 73 per cent less likely to spread the alpha variant. These findings go against some misinformation insisting that vaccines no longer do much to prevent the spread of COVID-19. On this 25th anniversary of the historic shutdown and subsequent demonstration by close to a quarter million people, Local 793 celebrates Metro Days of Action on October 25 and 26.

On those two days in 1996, workers, trade unionists and social groups in Metro Toronto organized a series of local disruptions and protests against the harsh new policies of Mike Harris’ Conservative government, leading to a city-wide general strike on October 25 and a mass rally on October 26.

More than 300 picket sites went up around Metro Toronto and thousands stayed off their jobs. Local 793 and other building and construction trade unions helped organize the many marches, picketing and demonstrations that helped shut Toronto down.

The pinnacle of the second day of protest was a massive march to the Ontario Legislature that was attended by hundreds of thousands of protesters. It is estimated that up to 300,000 people were in attendance, creating one of the biggest demonstrations ever seen in Ontario.

The Days of Action was instrumental in removing the Progressive Conservative party. In 2003, the Tory’s lost the federal election and the Liberal government came into power for the next 18 years, restoring fairness and balance in labour relations to the province.

Oscar Rivas outlasted unbeaten knockout artist Ryan Rozicki to win the inaugural WBC bridgerweight championship Friday evening at Olympia Theatre in Montreal.

Rozicki and Rivas went twelve rounds in the slugfest, but Rozicki came up on the wrong end of a unanimous decision (116-111, 115-112, 115-112).

Rozicki did his best to extend his perfect knockout and win streak through 13 pro fights but ultimately ran out of time. It was a brave showing for the career cruiserweight, whose record moves to 13-1 (13KOs) but who undoubtedly gained fans with his performance.

Rozicki is the son of Baffinland Union site rep, Bobby Currie. IUOE Local 793 is a proud sponsor and supporter of Ryan and wishes him success in his fighting career.
