Local 793 Remembers and Honours the Memory of the 11th Day

Today we stand in solidarity with our brothers and sisters across America as the world marks the 22nd anniversary of the terrorist attacks that claimed the lives of nearly 3,000 people. While the horror of 9/11 will stay with all of us, the heroism and sacrifice displayed by so many continues to inspire and stand as a fitting memorial to the true power of the human spirit. We will remember.

The government has provided more than $540,000 this year to help fund pre-apprenticeship training at OETIO, allowing staff to deliver eight-week pre-apprenticeship training for 36 non-Indigenous and 12 Indigenous members of Local 793.

Local 793 Vice President Dave Turple, OETIO Executive Director Rick Kerr and OETIO Director of Training and Apprenticeship Jeff Hewitt were in attendance.

Funding for pre-apprenticeship training is part of the government’s nearly $1.5 billion total investment in its Skilled Trades Strategy, developed in response to the Ontario construction industry’s need to fill 100,000 jobs by 2026.

During his visit, Crawford stopped into a Mobile Crane Level 3 class to speak with the apprentices.

“Your organization has been phenomenal and the job you do creating the environment for safe building is critical, so the government of Premier Doug Ford has provided this funding to support your organization to continue what you are doing,” he said.

OETIO Director of Training and Apprenticeship, Jeff Hewitt; OETIO Executive Director, Rick Kerr; Oakville MPP, Stephen Crawford; and Local 793 Vice President, Dave Turple, hold a funding certificate in front of an OETIO truck.

Local 793 Attends Labour Day Parades and Picnics Across Ontario

Local 793 officers, members, staff and their families enjoyed the balmy late summer weather across the province as they took to the streets to mark Labour Day. Across Ontario, workers took the opportunity to honour those who sacrificed so much for the cause of labour and to signal their determination to defend and expand those rights. As well as parades, participants enjoyed picnics, barbecues and, in Toronto, free admission to the Canadian National Exhibition.

Labour Day message from Local 793 Business Manager, Mike Gallagher:

On behalf of myself, the Officers, Executive Board and Staff of IUOE, Local 793, I would like to wish you and your loved ones a happy Labour Day long weekend.

For many, Labour Day signifies the end of summer and the beginning of a new school year. It is a day of rest and, for unions and labour activists, a day to represent success in the ongoing fight against anti-union laws, gaining fair wages and benefits, and improving health and safety for workers.

Our achievements are not possible without the collective struggles and actions of those in the past. Local 793 is unyielding as we continuously grow our union and build a prosperous, safe future for Operating Engineers across Ontario and Nunavut.

I encourage all members and their families to attend one of the many parades held around the province on Monday (Sunday in Oshawa) and at the Local 793-organized events. CLICK HERE for details about the parades and events in various districts.

Please be advised that all Local 793 offices across the province will be closed on Monday, Sept. 4, 2023. Regular office hours will resume on Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2023.

Fraternally yours,

Mike Gallagher
