James T. Callahan, general president of the International Union of Operating Engineers, marched alongside Grand Marshal Gallagher.

Local 793 president Joe Redshaw, Local 793 vice president and government affairs representative Joe Dowdall and chair of the St. Patrick’s Parade Society of Toronto Shaun Ruddy also marched side-by-side with Mike.

Celebrations for the St. Patrick’s Day parade kicked off on Friday, March 8, when the St. Patrick’s Parade Society held its Grand Marshal Ball at Steam Whistle Brewery in Toronto. The evening was in honour of the 2019 Grand Marshal – Local 793 business manager Mike Gallagher. The event attracted dignitary figures, labour and business leaders, and some of the most prominent members of Toronto’s Irish community. The night featured a performance by Irish music icon Mundy and traditional Irish dancers.

Union dues tax receipt online as of Feb. 21, 2019

As of Thursday, February 21, 2019, Local 793 members will be able to go online to the union website and download their 2018 tax receipts for union dues and T4A’s issued by Global Benefits. Originals are automatically sent out to members’ home addresses, as per usual.  The online feature was established by Local 793 business manager Mike Gallagher to allow members to download their receipts and file their tax returns early, if they choose to do so. Following are step-by-step instructions on how to go online and download the 2018 receipts online:

Log in to the member section of the IUOE Local 793 website. If you do not currently have an account, you must create one first.

Log in with your credentials

Once logged in to your member account profile, scroll to the bottom of the page and select view documents beside the downloadable tax forms description.

> Click on the available forms Dues (Union Dues Receipt) and T4A Form.  This will download a printable PDF form.

2019 Ray Goodfellow Scholarship Fund

Deadline for applications for The Ray Goodfellow Scholarship Fund is March 29, 2019. The award is sponsored by the Crane Rental Association of Ontario and International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 793. The award is sponsored by the Crane Rental Association of Ontario and International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 793.

The award is named after the late Ray Goodfellow, who owned Whiskey Jack Cranes Inc. Ray was president of the Crane Rental Association of Ontario, a 24-year member of Local 793, and a management trustee on the union’s training and life and health benefits trust funds.

To be eligible for this scholarship, the applicant must be the son, daughter or grandchild of one of the following:

  • A Crane Rental Association of Ontario (CRAO) company owner; or
  • An Employee of a CRAO company; or
  • An IUOE Local 793 member in good standing who is employed by a company that is an active member of the CRAO that works in the crane rental or concrete pump sectors.

Each year, a committee appointed by the Crane Rental Association of Ontario board of directors determines the amount and number of scholarships to be awarded. In 2018, two awards of $4,000 each will be awarded.

The scholarship recipient must be entering the first or subsequent year of a full-time course of study (at least two years in length) leading to a diploma, certificate or degree from any recognized public Canadian college or university

Eligible persons are able to apply more than once. However, once they have received a bursary they are no longer eligible to receive another award.

Applications must be supported by:

  • Transcripts of high school/ post-secondary achievement, and
  • Accompanied by a detailed letter of recommendation from an individual with personal academic knowledge of the candidate, outlining reasons why the bursary should be awarded.

Applicants must also submit a one thousand (1,000) word essay on the subject of either A or B:

A: The reason(s) why the scholarship will be of assistance.

B: The impact of being a son, daughter or grandchild of one of the following:

  • A Crane Rental Association of Ontario (CRAO) company owner; or
  • An Employee of a CRAO company; or
  • An IUOE Local 793 member in good standing who is employed by a company that is an active member of the CRAO that works in the crane rental or concrete pump sectors.

Members can either update their address online or can contact their nearest union office or 793 head office to update their address. Please Note: Due to privacy, we can only accept address changes from members. Although members will be able to download their 2018 tax receipts online, they are automatically sent out to members’ home addresses as well.

New start time for Thunder Bay monthly meetings

Beginning in April, the start time for the Thunder Bay district monthly meetings will been changed to 7 p.m. from 8 p.m. February and March’s monthly meetings remain an 8 p.m. start. The union’s executive board approved the changes. Thunder Bay’s meetings are held on the 1st Thursday of every month.
