Local 793 is sponsoring a photo contest.

All union members are invited to submit their best photos to be judged in eight categories.

The categories are:

  • Best sunrise photo from jobsite
  • Best sunset photo from jobsite
  • Best jobsite photo
  • Best jobsite crew photo
  • Best photo of operator on heavy equipment at work
  • Best photo of operator on tower/mobile crane at work
  • Best photo of operator holding 793 Operator or Making Tracks magazine
  • Best humorous operator photo

Following are the rules:

  • All entries must be emailed to gcameron@iuoelocal793.org, along with union registration number, by midnight on Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2016. Please include description of the photo, where it was taken and who is in the photo.
  • Entrants can submit only one photo per category.
  • All photos must be high resolution, at least 5×7 inches at 300 DPI.
  • All photos must be taken in Ontario or Nunavut with the exception of the best photo of operator holding 793 Operator or Making Tracks magazine.
  • Judges selected by the union will evaluate and choose winners in each category.
  • Judging will take place Thursday, Sept. 22, 2016.
  • Winners will be announced at the union’s general membership meeting in Oakville on Sunday, Sept. 25, 2016.
  • First place winners will receive a prize such as tickets to a concert, sporting event or the theatre, depending on what is available at the time.
  • Winning entries have a chance of being selected to be printed in a union calendar.

As business manager of Local 793, I am writing to ask for your assistance in building public – and ultimately political support – for important pipeline projects like TransCanada Energy East, Kinder Morgan TransMountain Expansion and Enbridge Line 3 Replacement.

Operating Engineers Ready if Energy East is a Go

The Energy East oil pipeline is far from a sure thing as National Energy Board (NEB) hearings get underway this week, but what is certain is that if and when the project gets a green light, hundreds of Ontario’s operating engineers will be ready to get right to work.

Anticipating the need for trained pipeline operators, the Operating Engineers Training Institute of Ontario (OETIO) campus in Morrisburg, Ont. launched a three-week training program for operators of dozers, sidebooms and excavators in June 2015. OETIO executive director Harold McBride reported recently that the program has already graduated 174 newly skilled operating engineers since the program debuted, with hopes to match that output in the next 15 months.

McBride acknowledged that Energy East faces opposition that could derail the project but he said the training centre really has no option but to train workers to be ready to go come 2018, when the NEB is scheduled to present its recommendations.

“Here is the way we look at it,” said McBride. “Everyone is sitting on the fence, but if we didn’t prepare ahead, we wouldn’t be able to supply the demand. So if we wait until it is totally confirmed, we won’t have time to train the people needed and it would allow foreign workers to come in.”

We have been nominated in the Banquet Facilities category. The public is being invited to cast votes online for the best banquet facility in the Oakville area. Winners of each category will be announced in an upcoming issue of the paper. Our banquet facility received the top award from the newspaper in 2015, 2013 and 2012. Election Ballots Mailed Out

The following is a statement issued by the Local 793 Election Committee regarding the union election. Ballots for the union election were mailed out Monday, July 18, 2016. Mail out of the ballots had been delayed due to a possible mail disruption. The following is a statement issued by the Local 793 Election Committee regarding the union election.

Ballots for the union election were mailed out Monday, July 18, 2016.

Mail out of the ballots had been delayed due to a possible mail disruption. However, there appears to be a window of opportunity to send out the ballots, as Canada Post and the Canadian Union of Postal Workers are still meeting, so the election committee has opted to proceed.

All ballots must be returned by Wednesday, Aug. 10, 2016. They will be counted by the accounting firm selected by the election committee on Thursday, Aug. 11, 2016.

Please note, because there is still the threat of a postal service disruption, the election committee is requesting that Local 793 members fill out and return their ballots as soon as possible after receiving them.

Tips for Preventing Heat Stress

Another heat wave is upon us, and Local 793 would like to remind all Brothers and Sisters of some steps you can take to help prevent Heat Stress. The Ministry of Labour recommends the following: Drink a cup of water every 20 minutes Avoid working in direct sunlight if possible Reduce the pace of work
• Increase the number of breaks Take breaks in a cool shaded area Schedule heavy work for cooler periods Wear light-coloured clothing Reduce the physical demands of work Employers have a duty under clause 25 (2)(h) […]

Another heat wave is upon us, and Local 793 would like to remind all Brothers and Sisters of some steps you can take to help prevent Heat Stress.

The Ministry of Labour recommends the following:

  • Drink a cup of water every 20 minutes
  • Avoid working in direct sunlight if possible
  • Reduce the pace of work
• Increase the number of breaks
  • Take breaks in a cool shaded area
  • Schedule heavy work for cooler periods
  • Wear light-coloured clothing
  • Reduce the physical demands of work

Employers have a duty under clause 25 (2)(h) of the Occupational Health and Safety Act to take every precaution reasonable in the circumstances for the protection of a worker. This includes developing policies and procedures to protect workers in environments that are hot because of process and/or weather.
Any member with concerns about their employer not taking appropriate steps to help workers avoid heat stress and exhaustion should contact their union for assistance.

Players Sought for Fundraising Hockey Tournament

Local 793 is putting together a team for the fourth annual Brad May Celebrity Hockey Classic at Sixteen Mile Sports Complex in Oakville on Friday, Nov. 18, 2016. The event is a fundraiser for Easter Seals Ontario. It offers hockey enthusiasts the chance to play with former NHL greats in a three-game tournament, as well as the opportunity to meet and greet the players during an exclusive VIP Draft Party the evening before.
