Local 793 members and their families are being encouraged to march in a number of Labour Day parades and attend events being held across the province on Monday, Sept. 2, 2019.

Following are details about the parades and events in various districts:

Toronto
Local 793 will be the Featured Local in the 2019 Labour Day parade. Please assemble by 8 a.m. on the east side of University Avenue north from Queen Street West to Armoury Street. The parade starts at 9:30 a.m. Union apparel will be supplied upon identification of being a Local 793 member. At the end of the parade, members will be admitted free to the CNE grounds.

Hamilton
Local 793 will be the Featured Local in the 2019 Labour Day parade. Please assemble by 9 a.m. on Stuart and Bay Streets. The parade starts at 10:30 a.m. and heads south on Bay Street, east on Main Street to James Street, north on James Street to Strachan Street, west on Strachan to Harbour Front Drive and into Bay Front Park. A barbecue and picnic will be held following the parade at Bay Front Park.

Ottawa
Please assemble by Noon at Ottawa City Hall at Elgin and Lisgar Streets. The parade will end at McNabb Park at Gladstone and Bronson Avenues. There will be a picnic at the park from 1:00 p.m. to 4 p.m. with pony rides, games, clowns, face painting, live music and food.

Belleville
Local 793 members and their families can march in the Kingston parade sponsored by the Kingston and District Labour Council. Please assemble by 10:00 a.m. at McBurney (Skeleton) Park. The parade starts at 10:30 a.m. and ends at city hall. There will be a picnic, live music and a free barbecue in the park after the parade.

London
Local 793 is sponsoring a picnic for members and their families at East Park, 1275 Hamilton Rd., in London. The picnic runs from 11:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. There will be barbecue hot dogs, pizza, chips, soft drinks/water available. Everyone is welcome!

Windsor
Please assemble by 9:00 a.m. at the corner of Seneca Street and Turner Road. The parade will start at 10:00 a.m. from the Local 200/444 Union Hall. The parade route is along Walkers Road and onto E.C. Row Services Road to the Fogolar Fulan Club. The parade and picnic are sponsored by the Windsor District Labour Council. There will be free hot dogs, pop and water, bouncy castles, face painting and a car show.

Sarnia
Please assemble at 8:30 a.m. behind the Sarnia Public Library on Julia Street. The parade will start at 9:30 a.m. Food and refreshments will be offered following the parade at the union hall at 1390A Lougar Ave.

Sault Ste. Marie
Members can meet at the Roberta Bondar Pavilion at 65 Foster Drive at 10:15 a.m. to receive a Union jean jacket and hat. Parade participants will gather and march at 11:20 a.m., followed by a picnic beginning at Noon. The picnic will feature free food, cotton candy, live music, face painting and a Motorcycle Show & Shine. The parade is sponsored by the Sault Ste. Marie District Labour Council.

Sudbury
Please assemble by 9:00 a.m. at the Bell Park parking lot. A presentation will be held at 10:00 a.m. followed by a parade alongside other unions and groups. Local 793 jean jackets will be supplied upon identification of being a Local 793 member. Following the march, a picnic will be held, with activities for kids and food vendors on-site.

Timmins
Members can gather at Local 793’s hall at 54 Waterloo Road between 9:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. to receive a Union jean jacket and hat, have a coffee and take a group photo. Local 793 will lead the parade, with three members carrying the 100th anniversary banner and flag. The march will begin at 11:00 a.m. at Gillies Lake (100 Lakeshore Road) and following the parade, a barbecue and family activities will be held at Gillies Lake.

Thunder Bay
Members can attend a Labour Day picnic at the Current River Park from Noon to 4 p.m. The event is organized by the Thunder Bay District Labour Council and includes music, games, inflatables, pony rides, hot dogs, ice cream and refreshments. If it’s raining, the picnic will be held on Sept. 3 from 6:00 p.m. to 9 p.m.

IUOE Local 793 participated in the seventh annual Touch-a-Truck event on Friday, August 23, in support of Big Brothers Big Sisters of South-West Durham.

The event, held outside and around the Tribute Communities Centre in Oshawa, allowed children of all ages to get up close and personal with more than 40 vehicles of all shapes and sizes.

The Operating Engineers have been involved in this event since 2016. Durham Region business representative Ryan Wilbee and Toronto road building business representative Jerry DaSilva were on-hand at this year’s event, assisting visitors who put their skills to the test on an OETIO excavator simulator.

Motor City Crane Rental are also annual supporters of the Touch-a-Truck event. Local 793 members Paul Zwicker and Dallen Rands were on-hand and brought a Terex AC 140 for display and to allow youngsters the opportunity to sit in the cab.

The Union’s head office in Oakville was alive on Sunday, August 18, as 1,200 members and their families enjoyed great entertainment, amazing food , pony rides, bouncy castles, activities for all ages, and so much more at the Toronto/Barrie 100th Anniversary Picnic.

Joining the celebrations was Canadian Regional Director, International Union of Operating Engineers, Lionel Railton, who shared greetings from IUOE General President James T. Callahan in his speech.

Oakville North Burlington MP Pam Damoff was also in attendance, celebrating the Local’s centenary.

Live music was provided by Freedom Train and Marvel comic superheroes were at the ready to pose for photos with children.

Captained by Local 793 member Sebastian Sapeta, the heavy equipment operators championed the Local 793 Tug-of-War challenge. The traditional battle pits earth-moving operators against crane operators.

London hosts 100th anniversary picnic

London was host to the penultimate 100th anniversary picnic on Saturday, August 17, as members and family gathered at East Park to celebrate. Along with great food, music and giveaways, guests enjoyed go-karts, a waterslide, wave pool, splash pad, mini-golf, batting cage, rock climbing, bumper cars and a bouncy castle.
