A memorial plaque honouring former Local 793 Executive Board member and Honourary Lifetime member Kenneth (Ken) Boyle was unveiled at the Sarnia YMCA (Jerry McCaw Family Centre) on Tuesday, October 24.

Brother Boyle, who passed away on February 11, 2021, after a 50-year career that saw him work in the earthmoving and pipeline sectors before becoming a crane operator, took his personal fitness seriously and was a popular figure at his local YMCA, where he spent much of his free time.

After his death, Local 793’s Executive Board voted to donate $15,000 on behalf of members to the YMCA in Sarnia, with the money being used to ensure almost 100 children and seniors will be able to access a subsidized membership over the next five years.

Local 793 Business Manager Mike Gallagher shared some of his fondest memories of Ken at Tuesday’s ceremony, which was also attended by Ken’s brother and retired executive board member Bill, retired Southwest Ontario supervisor Bob McQueen, retired Sarnia business rep Vince Prout, current Southwest Ontario supervisor Steve Booze, and Sarnia business reps Mike Barons and Paul Knight.

The plaque honouring Brother Ken Boyle and his legacy will be affixed to the wall in the YMCA’s cycle training room, where he enjoyed so many happy hours.

On the morning of Saturday, October 14, we will be conducting a scheduled power outage at our Oakville head office as the IT Department works to install an Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS) system for our new computer servers. The outage will last for approximately 4-5 hours, beginning at 9 A.M.

This upgrade is crucial to enhancing our infrastructure’s reliability, while also ensuring the integrity and safety of the Union’s and our members’ data.

As a result, members will not be able to access services usually available through the Local 793 or OEBAC websites or the OEBAC mobile app – such as paying Union dues or filing a benefits claim – for the duration of the shutdown.

We apologize for any inconvenience this temporary interruption may cause and very much appreciate your understanding in this matter.

The International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 793, reached a significant milestone, celebrating the 30th anniversary of the IUOE Local 793 Non-Profit Housing Corporation (Local 793 NPH).

For three decades, Local 793 NPH, has been a beacon of hope, providing not just housing but a sense of community and belonging to a diverse group of individuals, including pensioners, single-parent families, the mentally and physically challenged, and others who have faced challenges in Toronto’s competitive real estate market.

The construction and development of the 15-storey residential building at 2020 Don Mills Road in North York began in the fall of 1991 and when completed two years later, the building included 221 separate rental units, consisting of 76 one-bedroom units, 124 two-bedroom units and 21 three-bedroom units. 130 of the units were subsidized and 14 of those were fully accessible.

The building officially opened on November 12, 1993.

The Local 793 NPH board of directors have continuously worked to maintain and improve the building itself and the amenities it provides, including the formation of a vibrant tenants’ association and seniors’ club and creating a children’s play area and gym. By focusing on the needs of residents and not the bottom line, IUOE Local 793 is proud of its legacy in creating a place that so many people continue to call home.
